Kayla, a Resident at i.c. stars, an Equinix Foundation nonprofit partner, first explored tech career pathways during a Pathways to Tech data center tour. That single experience ignited her interest in data center roles. Within months, she landed an IBX internship, and today, she's a full-time Equinix Data Center Technician on the Chicago team at CH3.

Pathways to Tech empowers Equinix volunteers to inspire high school students through classroom talks, data center tours, and hands-on STEM activities—opening pathways to digital infrastructure careers, internships, and apprenticeships.
Schools join through local partnerships and can arrange school presentations, Equinix data center site tours, and/or a half-day education days.
Students participate through their classes, gaining exposure to technical careers through data center tours and conversations with Operations professionals.
Students learned not only about how data centers work and the connections that keep our digital world running, but also about Equinix's culture, values, and growth. Most inspiring? Hearing from young professionals who came through training programs, helped them imagine new possibilities for their own futures.

In 2026, Pathways to Tech expanded from a proven pilot to a global enterprise program offered in over 40 Equinix locations around the world, including South Africa, Bangalore, Dubai, Frankfurt, Madrid, and Atlanta. It continues employee-led efforts like data center tours, school visits, and education days to educate youth on tech and digital infrastructure careers.
Community organizations, school districts, or high schools that serve 14-18 year old students can reach out to Equinix at PathwaystoTech@equinix.com with information about their location and whether they’d like to have an Equinix volunteer visit and give a presentation or have the students visit the office and data center for a tour and conversation.
Goals include sparking interest in data center careers among diverse students ages 14-18, building talent pipelines for early-career programs, and boosting community engagement via volunteerism. Expected outcomes include student-to-hire conversions, improved employee engagement, and stronger community partnerships.
