Frequently asked questions about sustainability

What is Equinix’s approach to environmental responsibility?

Equinix designs, builds and operates high-performance data centers that optimize energy and water use, meet recognized building standards and integrate circular practices and green spaces.

What role does sustainability play in the development of Equinix’s new data centers?

Equinix targets key commodities and materials for reducing embodied carbon emissions in construction projects. Working collaboratively with our general contractors, we embed sustainability into our new build data centers through a three-pillar hierarchy. Avoid: identifying opportunities to use fewer materials, avoiding some emissions entirely. Reduce: Selecting lower impact alternatives for the materials that cannot be avoided. Innovate: Exploring partnerships that accelerate and scale technologies and materials that support a low-carbon future.

What are Equinix’s green data center initiatives?

Equinix focuses on environmental initiatives where we can make the biggest impact. These areas include energy supply and availability, water withdrawal and consumption, waste and circularity, and reducing our carbon footprint through efficiency, clean and renewable energy solutions, low-carbon building materials, and collaborating with suppliers to reduce emissions across our value chain.
