AMSTERDAM, Netherlands – January 27, 2025 – Equinix (Nasdaq: EQIX), the world’s digital infrastructure company®, has signed a letter of intent with the Municipality of Diemen to explore within a year the potential of residual heat exchange from its AM4 data center at Science Park, Amsterdam. This initiative reflects Equinix’s ongoing commitment to leverage its infrastructure to support local sustainability goals and the transition to a greener future.
The agreement with the Municipality of Diemen is part of a broader effort to reduce carbon emissions by repurposing surplus heat from data center operations. Over the next year, the collaboration will investigate the feasibility of integrating residual heat into a district heating network that would supply homes and businesses across Diemen.
Driving innovation in sustainable heating
“As a global leader in digital infrastructure, Equinix is committed to driving sustainable innovation,” said Michiel Eielts, Managing Director for the Netherlands at Equinix. “Exploring how the heat generated by our AM4 data center can contribute to local communities is an exciting opportunity to demonstrate the dual benefits of digital transformation and environmental stewardship.”
This initiative is part of a larger heat recovery program for Equinix in Europe and across the globe. Projects include a long-running collaboration in Helsinki, where one of the company’s data centers channels excess heat into a district heating network, meeting the annual heating needs of approximately 1,500 one-bedroom apartments. In France, Equinix’s PA10 facility houses an innovative system to recover the heat produced by Equinix customer equipment, transferring it to the Plaine Saulnier urban development zone and the Olympic Aquatic Centre, which hosted several events during the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Eielts added: “These projects show the impact we can make on the energy transition when governments, urban planners, heating network providers and data center operators work together.”
A partnership for a greener future
The AM4 data center generates residual heat through cooling of customer IT processes, which are covered by 100% renewable energy. Currently, this heat is efficiently dissipated, but through a district heating network, it could be redirected to provide low carbon warmth to Diemen’s residents. Collaborating with Equinix, the Municipality of Diemen takes a key step towards achieving its energy transition goals, advancing a more sustainable future for its residents.
Matthijs van den Berg, Councilor of the Municipality of Diemen noted: “We are very pleased to explore a collaboration with Equinix to repurpose heat from equipment within data centers to heat the homes of people in Diemen. Utilizing the residual heat for a district heating network would achieve a significant step towards a sustainable future. This initiative demonstrates how we could accelerate the energy transition in Diemen, while simultaneously improving the comfort of our residents.”
By utilizing innovative heat solutions, the partnership has the potential to set a benchmark for low carbon urban heating in the Netherlands and beyond.
