Australia’s leading sovereign AI provider, SCX.ai, launched the country’s first sovereign AI inferencing node in an Equinix data center in Sydney, giving local enterprises a faster, more secure way to bring AI into their core operations without compromising performance, regulatory compliance or strategic autonomy. AI sovereignty as a national imperative

AI has advanced beyond experimentation. In Australia, it is now recognized as a key driver of economic growth and global competitiveness. But recognition alone is not enough. AI ambitions are outpacing the local AI infrastructure needed to support them, pushing government, financial services, healthcare and critical national infrastructure organizations to rely on foreign-owned providers such as hyperscalers for their AI needs. This is increasing the trade deficit and data risk for Australian businesses, government agencies and residents. Bridging the infrastructure gap

Rethinking the AI infrastructure stack

Sovereign AI comes with real trade-offs. Fully sovereign AI infrastructure can restrict access to frontier compute from international cloud providers and increase the risk of vendor lock-in. Further, while moving AI workloads on-premises can address sovereignty concerns, it can also increase latency and hinder AI performance.

SCX.ai transformed the AI foundation end to end, from silicon to models. The company partnered with Equinix and AI chip provider SambaNova Systems to deliver one of the first sovereign AI infrastructure deployments that meet Australia’s regulatory requirements while outperforming traditional offshore and local alternatives.

SCX.ai’s first sovereign AI node offers a purpose-built solution to give enterprises greater control over where AI workloads are processed and how sensitive data is governed in compliance with local laws and regulations. The choice to host the node at Equinix’s SY5 Sydney data center was not accidental.

Equinix provides neutral, private, secure and interconnected infrastructure designed to support unique sovereignty postures. Customers can securely transfer data within this environment, choosing from a broad ecosystem of global and local network service providers, including the Australian IX while keeping highly sensitive IT assets within Australian jurisdiction and governance. 

Equinix facilities align with the Australian government’s assurance expectations, including Certified Strategic Facilities and Strategic Enclaves under the Hosting Certification Framework, the Infosec Registered Assessors Program (IRAP) and the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF), giving SCX.ai and its customers a trusted onshore foundation to meet sovereignty requirements while retaining the ability to securely connect to global partners when required.

Sovereign AI, designed for speed

The architecture powered by SCX.ai and Equinix delivers a substantial latency advantage. Typical offshore AI inference can incur 150–300 milliseconds of delay. With Equinix, the local deployment greatly reduces latency to sub‑10 milliseconds, enabling real-time AI applications that were previously impractical onshore. Supported by Equinix Fabric, a software-defined interconnection service, SCX.ai can directly connect with other global AI models and cloud providers. Leveraging Equinix’s AI ecosystem (which includes global AI model providers such as DeepSeek, MiniMax and OpenAI), SCX.ai can provide access to leading open-weight models while keeping sensitive data fully sovereign. In addition, SCX.ai’s sovereign AI node is built to support ASIC-accelerated architecture through its partnership with SambaNova Systems, delivering 4x faster AI inferencing compared to GPU-based platforms. For SCX.ai customers, the result is significant performance gains.

AI sovereignty in Australia and beyond

While Australia is the starting point, SCX.ai’s vision extends beyond the national borders. Leveraging Equinix’s global data center footprint that spans 36 countries, SCX.ai has an ambitious roadmap to offer sovereign AI to other strategic locations. For customers that need granular control over where traffic is routed (down to the country or jurisdiction level), SCX.ai can leverage Equinix Fabric Geo Zones, a network-level capability that enforces geographic routing policy directly in the network. Equinix Fabric Geo Zones keeps traffic within defined geographic boundaries, giving customers greater control over how traffic moves across the Equinix Fabric network. 

The company plans to launch a second sovereign node in South Australia by the end of 2026, followed by eight additional nodes across Asia in 2027. With nodes in Singapore, Jakarta and Manila, SCX.ai aims to deliver high-performance sovereign AI inference across the Asia-Pacific region.
