Across Hong Kong, the construction sector is under pressure from an aging workforce, heavy manual paperwork and ongoing safety risks, even as the industry experiments with digital twins, IoT, robotics and drones on leading projects. Recent government and industry reports show that construction still records the highest number of industrial fatalities among all sectors, underscoring the need to leapfrog from isolated technology pilots to a true AI era, with a unified AI platform that integrates data across sites, powers model training and predictive analytics, and enables humans and machines to co-work safely and intelligently at scale.

Gammon’s AI platform acts as a unified, real-time “brain” for projects, integrating data from BIM, digital twins, IoT sensors, drones, robots, site reports and enterprise systems into a single operational picture, so teams can see safety risks, progress and quality issues as they emerge. It embeds AI agents directly into construction workflows to read drawings and requests for information (RFIs); monitor telemetry and imagery; and proactively flag clashes, hazards or delays. Low-code tools let domain experts build and adapt apps, copilots and dashboards under IT governance; predictive models anticipate incidents, defects, cost overruns and schedule slippage while recommending preventive actions. Designed for human-AI teaming at scale, the platform keeps humans in control of critical decisions while AI handles data-heavy, repetitive tasks, accelerating AI-assisted solution delivery and helping Gammon consistently deliver safer, smarter and more sustainable projects.

From vision to reality

Transformation begins with finding the right infrastructure partner to evolve legacy systems into a modern digital backbone that connects data from core systems, IoT devices and third-party sources for AI-driven services. Logicalis, an end-to-end IT services partner of Equinix, helped Gammon design and build a robust hybrid multicloud architecture, unifying on-premises data centers and cloud connectivity. With deep cloud and networking expertise, Logicalis ensured a smooth migration and continues to provide managed services so Gammon can focus on its core business.

Small success for bold visions

One of Gammon’s first proof points is SmartXR, built on its new AI platform to transform site safety. After just two weeks, Liu and his team piloted the solution across five project sites, using video analytics captured from wearable cameras to identify dynamic risks—an essential aspect of managing the constantly changing conditions on a construction site. The pilot has delivered promising results, with a 60% increase in the number of risk factors detected compared with traditional visual inspection.

The video footage from cameras, which will be expanded to robot dogs and drones, is streamed into AI models that generate dynamic risk ratings and actionable insights for safety officers. “This is not science fiction, but everyday safety powered by AI,” says Liu, noting that SmartXR makes inspection more frequent and thorough, unlocking productivity gains beyond what human operators could achieve alone.

Ultimately, Gammon aims to seamlessly blend human expertise with AI. Over time, its platform is expected to support a broader range of workflows, using an infrastructure enabled by Equinix and managed by Logicalis to power human-machine collaboration, accelerate digital service development and set new benchmarks for construction safety, integrity and excellence.
