451 Research - Equinix, GIC Form $1B+ Joint Venture to Develop xScale Data Centers in Japan

Equinix and GIC Private Ltd., a Singaporean wealth fund, have partnered again – this time to open hyperscale data centers (xScale™) in Tokyo and Osaka in Japan. As cloud computing continues to become even more pervasive globally, hyperscale infrastructure is needed to help providers scale to keep up with customer demand. According to 451 Research, this joint venture will provide Equinix with an opportunity to deepen its relationships by offering these facilities primarily to hyperscale cloud providers who are already global customers.

Highlights:

These xScale builds will attract large scale cloud tenants, which in turn will bring in more interconnect-focused clients
Equinix has the scale and resources to tackle a large, complex joint venture like this and can build multiple hyperscale facilities at once
Once fully built out, these facilities will provide around 138MW of power
