As Equinix's CIO, Brian Lillie looks to the venture community for insight into the latest technologies.

Forced to do more with less, some CIOs are spurring in-house innovation labs, setting aside a portion of their staffing and budgets for trying new cloud services or building applications they hope will generate additional revenue for the company. Brian Lillie, CIO of data center hosting concern Equinix Inc., said that he allots 5% of his IT budget to innovative projects, which includes building mobile applications to support the company’s sales team.
