Stephen M. Smith – President & CEO
Stephen M. Smith joined Equinix in 2007 from Hewlett-Packard Co., where he served as senior vice president of HP Services, responsible for management of the organizations Consulting and Integration, Managed Services, and Technology Deployment and Support business groups.
Prior to joining HP, Mr. Smith served as vice president of Global Professional and Managed Services at Lucent Technologies. He has also held various management and sales positions during his 16 years with Electronic Data Systems Corporation, including chief sales officer, president of EDS Asia-Pacific, and president of EDS Western Region. At EDS his roles spanned sales, business development, operations, acquisition-driven integration and the management of international growth.
Mr. Smith had a successful eight-year career in the U.S. Army where, among other roles, he was aide-de-camp to the office of the commander in chief of the U.S. Armed Forces in the Pacific.
Mr. Smith graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.
Keith D. Taylor – Chief Financial Officer
Keith D. Taylor joined Equinix in 1999 and has served in a variety of roles such as Equinix's Director of Finance & Administration, Vice President, Finance & Chief Accounting Officer, and now as CFO. Before joining Equinix, Mr. Taylor was employed by International Wireless Communications, Inc., an operator, owner and developer of wireless communication networks throughout Asia and Latin America as vice president, finance and controller. Prior to joining International Wireless Communications, Inc., Mr. Taylor was employed by Becton Dickinson & Company, a medical and diagnostic device manufacturer, as a senior sector analyst for the diagnostic businesses in Asia, Latin America and Europe.
Mr. Taylor holds a B.B.A from Bishops University in Quebec, Canada and is a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.
Margie Backaus – Chief Business Officer
Margie Backaus joined Equinix in 1999 and has more than 20 years experience in the telecommunications industry. Prior to joining Equinix, Ms. Backaus was Global One's Chief Marketing Officer, responsible for strategy and execution of Global One products, worldwide. In that capacity, she oversaw the development of Global One market strategies, product management and profitability, worldwide marketing programs, market research, marketing communications and sales support for 65 countries. Prior to joining Global One, Ms. Backaus enjoyed a successful nine-year career with AT&T, holding various roles in marketing and product management, operations and regulatory affairs.
Ms. Backaus is originally from Atlanta, Georgia, where she earned her M.B.A. from Emory University.
Eric Schwartz – Chief Development Officer
Eric Schwartz joined Equinix in 2006 and leads the company's strategy, business development, and network technology development. Mr. Schwartz came to Equinix from BellSouth where he was Vice President – IP Communications and led the development and implementation of advanced technologies including VoIP. Prior to joining BellSouth, he was Executive Vice President of Harold A. Dawson Company, an Atlanta-based real estate development company. Mr. Schwartz also is a former member of McKinsey & Co. where he consulted with telecommunications and financial services companies in the U.S. and Asia on strategic issues.
Mr. Schwartz earned an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and was an undergraduate at Stanford University where he earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and a B.A. in Economics.
Peter Ferris – President, Equinix United States
Peter Ferris joined Equinix in 1999 from Frontier GlobalCenter where he was Senior VP of Sales. Under his leadership, the company experienced a triple-digit growth in sales for Internet data products and services. Prior to Frontier GlobalCenter, Mr. Ferris served as VP of Eastern Sales for Genuity. Before Genuity, Mr. Ferris held the position of VP of Mid-Atlantic Sales for MFS Internet Services.
Mr. Ferris holds a degree in Economics from Ohio Wesleyan University.
Guy de Rohan Willner – President, Equinix Europe
Guy has over 15 years' experience of leadership in high-tech companies. In 1998 he co-founded IXEurope - today Equinix Europe - a market leader in high-end datacenter services. Willner raised approximately $200 million in during the build-up of the company as revenues grew over 600% in the first 3 years. IXEurope officially became the UK's fastest growing tech company in 2002 according to the UK’s Sunday Times Tech Track league table, and Willner received personal recognition as Semi-Finalist in the UK’s Entrepreneur of the Year (2003). In 2006 IXEurope received the Queens Award for Enterprise in recognition of its fast growth and establishment across Europe.
Prior to co-founding IXEurope, Willner worked for Vivendi Group between 1992 and 1998 both in the UK and in Hungary. Prior to 1992 Mr Willner began his career with Philips NV in Paris working in Compact Disc Interactive, Smart Card and telematics technologies. Willner speaks French and German (and a little Hungarian) and holds a BSc Hons Engineering at Oxford Brookes University.
Samuel Lee – President, Equinix Asia-Pacific
As President, Equinix Asia-Pacific, Mr. Samuel Lee holds overall responsibility for all Equinix operations in the Asia-Pacific region, including Internet Business Exchange™ (IBX®) centers in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore and Sydney. Mr. Lee brings a wealth of experience in telecom and Internet services as well as expertise in startup operations.
Most recently, Mr. Lee was Vice President of Equinix Asia-Pacific. Under his tenure, the Hong Kong IBX became an EBITDA (defined as income or loss from operations before depreciation, amortization, accretion, stock-based compensation expense and restructuring charges) and cash flow positive operation. Lee also successfully led the Equinix Hong Kong team in building a strong position for Equinix in providing business continuity and disaster recovery services for the financial services industry in Hong Kong.
Prior to joining Equinix in 2000, Lee served as managing director of Pacific Gateway Exchange (PGE), a provider of wholesale and retail long distance, Internet, and bandwidth services. In this position, he spearheaded the companys expansion into the Hong Kong market, focusing on carrier services, such as voice wholesale, bilateral relationships, capacity and back haul sales, and Internet business services, including transit, colocation, and content delivery services.
Prior to PGE, Mr. Lee founded Telekom Consulting Limited, a consulting firm offering strategic assistance to network providers in the deregulated telecommunications market in Hong Kong and Asia. Lee also held management positions at Teleglobe International, Intel and Sprint.
Mr. Lee holds a B.A. from City University of Hong Kong.
Sushil (Sam) Kapoor – Chief Operating Officer, Equinix United States
Sam Kapoor joined Equinix in 2001 from WorldCom, where he held the position of Vice President Hosting Operations. As Vice President Hosting Operations, he was responsible for the build out and day-to-day operations of six hosting centers. Prior to the company's acquisition by WorldCom, Mr. Kapoor served as Vice President, Global Network Operations for CompuServe Network Services and was responsible for the engineering, implementation and operations for CompuServes worldwide network. Before joining CompuServe, Mr. Kapoor held the position of Sr. Director, Telecommunication for over 10 years at Lexis-Nexis in Miamisburg, OH.
Mr. Kapoor holds an M.B.A. (Operations Research) from Miami University of Ohio and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati.
Christophe de Buchet – Chief Operating Officer, Equinix Europe
Christophe de Buchet has 15 years general management experience in international IT markets. In 1991 he founded VoiceQuest a specialist distributor of speech recognition, networking, memory and storage devices in the UK. In 1992 VoiceQuest was acquired by Austin Ventures-funded TechWorks Inc, headquartered in Texas. Christophe became European Vice-President of TechWorks and went on to establish pan-European sales and procurement channels, and a manufacturing and logistics centre in Ireland. In 1998, TechWorks Inc was acquired by Melco Inc, a manufacturer of computer peripherals listed on the first sections of the Tokyo and Nagoya stock exchanges. Christophe stayed as European Vice-President until he left to co-found Equinix with Guy Willner in 1999. Christophe holds a business degree from the ESSEC business school in France.
Brandi Galvin Morandi – General Counsel & Corporate Secretary
Brandi Galvin Morandi joined Equinix in January 2003 and has served as Equinix's General Counsel and Corporate Secretary since that time. Before joining Equinix, Ms. Morandi practiced in the corporate securities group at the law firm of Gunderson Dettmer Stough Villeneuve Franklin & Hachigian, LLP (Gunderson Dettmer) in Menlo Park, California. At Gunderson Dettmer, Ms. Morandi represented public and private companies in a variety of debt and equity offerings, mergers and acquisitions as well as providing general corporate public company representation. Prior to her legal career, Ms. Morandi held various positions in the field of public relations.
Ms. Morandi holds a B.A. in International Relations and Journalism from the University of Southern California and a J.D. from The University of California, Hastings College of the Law.
Keri Crask – Vice President, Global Human Resources
Keri Crask joined Equinix in 2005 and is responsible for leading the company's global human resource functions. Prior to joining Equinix, Ms. Crask built and led the global human resource team for Engenio Information Technology, an external RAID OEM storage system subsidiary of LSI Logic. Ms. Crask has also served in Human Resource management roles in the service and healthcare industries and in higher education.
Ms. Crask has completed the Stanford Human Resource Executive Program and holds an M.S. in Adult Education from Kansas State University along with a B.A. from Southwestern College.
Herb Kirchner – Vice President, Business Operations
Herb Kirchner joined Equinix in September 2003, as Director of Northern Californias IBX Operations. Prior to joining Equinix, Mr. Kirchner served as Director of North American Operations at CompuServe/UUNet and Director of Customer Program Management at Ameritech.
Mr. Kirchner holds a B.A. in Business Administration from Otterbein College, Westerville, Ohio.
Jason Starr – Director of Investor Relations
Jason Starr joined Equinix in early 2000 and has served in a variety of roles including product development, product management and channel marketing, prior to assuming his current role in 2003. Mr. Starr joined Equinix from Excite@Home where he was Director of Channel MSO Accounts, and was most notably instrumental in signing and launching the commercial HFC Internet offerings for AT&T Broadband and Cox Communications commercial divisions. He was also one of the first employees at NETCOM OnLine communications where he managed the companys strategic partnership with WorldCom, as well as other sales management roles.
Mr. Starr has more than 13 years experience in the Internet telecommunications industry and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from California State University, Chico.
